Cowhide leather that undergoes a combination tanning process is known as Latigo leather. The tanning process involves an initial chrome tanning, followed by a subsequent vegetable tanning. Latigo leather is typically infused with oils and waxes, using techniques such as hot-stuffing, wet-stuffing, and fat liquoring, to increase the amount of oil and wax the hide can hold. This infusion, combined with its partial chrome tanning, results in a moderately flexible leather that is less rigid than fully vegetable-tanned leather, but more rigid than fully chrome-tanned leather.

Due to its weight and tanning process, Latigo leather is considered one of the most expensive types of cattle hide leather. In the context of Western saddlery, the term "latigos" refers to the straps that secure the cinches to the saddle rigging. Latigo leather is highly prized for its durability and versatility, making it an excellent choice for a wide range of applications, including tack, straps, belts, pet collars, leashes, and cinches.
